Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine dates back thousands of years and is one of the oldest health care systems in the world. In Australia TCM practitioners complete a professional qualification in both TCM diagnosis and treatment and Western bio-medical science.Practitioners maintain rigorous standards of practice through membership of professional associations, continuing professional education, national accreditation and a Code of Ethics.

Rebates are available though various private health funds and treatment is available through the Workers Compensation Scheme.

TCM works on the premise that energy flows around the body along channels or meridians, and that various techniques can stimulate the flow of this energy when it is blocked or weak.

TCM offers an integrated system of primary health care consisting of acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, massage, and gua sha, herbs, diet and lifestyle advice.

Acupuncture In acupuncture fine, sterile needles are inserted into specific areas (acu-points) to clear energy blockages and encourage normal flow of qi (energy) though the body. Laser stimulation and electoracupuncture can also be used to activate the acupuncutre points. Acupuncture has achieved formal recognition by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

MoxibustionThis treatment can be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture. In moxibusiton the dried leaves of the mugwort plant (Artemisia Vulgaris) are compressed into cones or sticks and heat is applied to cause them to smoulder. The herb (commonly called moxa) is then placed near the skin surface to warm it, and through this method the flow of qi is encouraged.

CuppingSuction cups can be applied to the soft tissue of the back, shoulders and thighs to stimulate the flow of blood and qi and to treat a variety of conditions ranging from colds to musculoskeletal injuries. The cups are made of pyrex glass or plastic.

Massage TCM practitioners use Tui Na massage which can be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture.

Gua Sha and Dermal Hammers Stimulation of blood and energy flow to the skin surface can be achieved through this treatment. In Gua Sha the skin surface is stimulated with a flat instrument, and a dermal hammer is a fine instrument which is used to tap along the acupuncture meridian. Both treatments are painless.

Herbs TCM herbs are used to supplement acupuncture treatments, especially when the disease is chronic.

Diet and Lifestyle Advice - Diet and Lifestyle advice are given according to TCM philosophies.

TCM has a holistic approach to therapy and treats a wide range of conditions both acute and chronic. It can also be used for health promotion to maintain normal body function and assist with immunity.Examples of conditions acupuncture treats are:

    Hypnotherapy

    Hypnosis………A natural state of mind

    Hypnotherapy….Making positive choices

In Hypnotherapy the practitioner helps the client achieve an altered state of consciousness or trance to enable them to make positive changes in their lives. Whist the client is in hypnosis the hypnotherapist makes beneficial suggestions to their subconscious mind.

During hypnosis the attention of the client is turned inwards. Their conscious awareness is distracted, and the deeper levels of the mind can be accessed and motivated to change in a way that is perfectly natural to the subject.

Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon and everyone can go into a natural trance state several times a day.  Being totally immersed in a piece of music is one example of natural hypnosis.   It is the mind's way of taking time out to process experience and learning.  It can generally be experienced as being rather like day dreaming.

Of all the complementary therapies, hypnotherapy is one of the most self empowering ones, and also one of the most misunderstood……..

    The History of Hypnosis

Hypnosis as a phenomenon has been recognized in the East and the West for thousands of years. The power of the shaman, the influence of the faith healer and the attraction of the guru all use hypnosis in one way or another.  In the late 19th and early 20th Century Western Medicine used hypnosis extensively to treat patients. For example, Dr Esdaile, in the 19th Century used hypnosis as an anesthetic in India to carry out surgery.  For various reasons towards the middle of the 20th Century   hypnosis fell out of favour with the medical profession.  Today hypnosis still retains an aura of strangeness about it for many people, but hypnotherapy can make significant positive changes in a person’s life.

    Hypnotherapy Today

Complementary Therapy is taking new directions in the 21st century and Hypnotherapy is moving forward with this trend through…..

    Questions about Hypnotherapy

    Q. What is Hypnotherapy used for?

    A. To solve a wide variety of issues and change deep seated patterns of behavior and habits.  Hypnotherapy can help a client:

    • Manage stress
    • Deal with depression
    • Remove anxiety and phobias
    • Improve personal performance
    • Enhance relationships
    • Many more.

    Q. Can children be hypnotised?

    A. Yes.  Children respond extremely well to hypnosis.

    Q. How many sessions will a client need?

    A. This depends on many factors, and can be sorted out during a client/therapist interview.

    Q.  Can everyone be hypnotised?

    A. Yes, eventually, but the response depends on the individual, and how willing they are to let themselves experience the therapy. People vary as to how quickly and how deep they go into hypnosis.

    Q. Does the Hypnotherapist control the subject?

    A. No. Hypnosis is not mind control. This is a common misconception. The client has to allow him/herself to go into a trance, and be willing to change

    Q. Will all clients make positive changes with hypnotherapy?

    A.  With commitment to treatment. A client has to be ready and willing to make changes in their lives. The hypnotherapist can help them make these changes; they cannot do all the work.

    Q. Is Hypnosis dangerous?

    A. No. If used ethically and expertly, it is completely safe. In Queensland, the Health Rights Commission, which is the Government body charged with handling all complaints against Health Care Practitioners, including hypnotherapists, reports that since its inception in 1992 there have been no substantiated complaints involving the use of hypnotherapy as provided by Complementary Health Care Practitioners. (Reference AAPHAN 2009)

    Q. Is the client asleep during hypnosis?

    A. No. The client is in an altered state of awareness in hypnosis. However, most people will be aware of what the hypnotherapist is saying.
